Description
Already in school,
, born 1937 in rural Swabia, was fascinated by electrons and atoms. In Giessen, Chicago, Uppsala, Seattle, and Princeton she learned to sail uncharted waters of theoretical physics and chemistry while simultaneously learning to sail in real life as one of the first female PhD students and postdocs.
She qualified as a professor at the age of 30 and five years later she chose Bonn as her home port because of its excellent computer facilities. Under her leadership, Bonn became a mecca for the new discipline of theoretical chemistry. She developed very clever and powerful computational methods and calculated the properties of molecules and their reaction dynamics to understand for instance atmospheric chemistry.
Because of her great expertise in interdisciplinary research and her integrity, she was called to important science governance positions, and she received numerous awards.
Today, her legacy is carried on by her students many of whom are now sailing their own ships at illustrious institutions around the world.
