“Lives in Chemistry” Book Series Wins Gold Medal

Gold Medal one of “The Best German Book Designs 2022“

The “Lives in Chemistry” book series is now recognized as one of “The Best German Book Designs 2022“.

At an award ceremony on June 13, 2022 in Berlin, Katharina Hesse, CEO of the Stiftung Buchkunst (“Book Art Foundation”) presented the 25 of “The Best German Book Designs” with five books in each of five categories ranging from fiction to children’s books. 645 titles were submitted, and the “Lives in Chemistry” series received a gold medal in the reference & text books category. It can now be nominated for the international “Best Book Design From All Over The World” competition. The foundation critically monitors book production and awards books exemplary in design, conception, and workmanship every year. All winners will be exhibited at the Book Fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig.

Two juries selected the most innovative book designs in an elaborate process, and 14 jurors spent seven days discussing. The awarded books demonstrate the range of design and manufacturing. “I had great fun being part of the jury. The quality of all titles was exceptional. You simply notice that standard solutions don’t get you very far anymore,” says juror Stephanie Ising, summing up this year’s jury work.

The autobiography series “Lives in Chemistry” is conceived as a tribute to outstanding scientists, describes their route to success, aims to inspire in particular young people in particular. Behind the series is a prominent Advisory Board of the History of Chemistry division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and the outstanding book designer Andreas Toepfer, well-known in the international book world. Without the sponsor Karl Reuter, CEO of Reuter Chemische Apparatebau RCA e.K. Freiburg, Germany, the autobiographies would not have come into being. And without Eva E. Wille, member of the Advisory Board and spiritus rector of the design of the series, the brand “Lives in Chemistry” would not have been created.

This September, two new additions to the series by Stephen Kent, USA, and Dieter Oesterhelt, Germany, will be published, both of whom have had fundamental impact on contemporary biochemistry. The publisher, the authors, the Advisory Board, the entire team are delighted to have received this prestigious gold medal. It motivates them to continue this series in this form, with its outstanding content and elaborate technical design. It demonstrates also the impact that chemistry has on our society.
